Single-Game Performances Added to Leaders Index

Posted by Neil Paine on September 28, 2011

NFL Leaders, Football Records, NFL Leaderboards - Pro-Football-Reference.com

A quick note to let everyone know that we've added single-game leaders to the leaderboard index, including performances from 1940-1959. This means you can see exactly where Tom Brady's Week 1 performance stands all-time:

These records are relatively complete for the 1940-2011 period -- although we only have full box scores for games since 1960, we also have data on all 300+ yard passing & 100+ yard rushing/receiving games going back to 1940. For more in-depth searches on post-1960 records, you should use the Play Index Game Finder tool, but this option is good for quickly looking up single-game records over a greater span of seasons.

History Was Made in Last Sunday’s 49ers-Bengals Game

Posted by Neil Paine on September 28, 2011

On Monday, John Adair tweeted this about Sunday's San Francisco-Cincinnati game:

The 13-8 final score of the 49ers-Bengals game, according to Pro-Football-Reference, has never happened before in NFL history #49ers

How did he find that? Using the Game Scores PI tool, he was able to look for all games that ever had a 13-8 score:

Rk Week Day Date Winner/tie Loser/tie PtsW PtsL YdsW TOW YdsL TOL
1 3 Sun September 25, 2011 boxscore W San Francisco 49ers @ Cincinnati Bengals 13 8 226 1 228 3
Provided by Pro-Football-Reference.com: View Original Table
Generated 9/28/2011.

Pretty neat, right?

Here's another one for you -- last week's Saints-Texans game was only the 2nd in NFL history with a 40-33 score:

Rk Week Day Date Winner/tie Loser/tie PtsW PtsL YdsW TOW YdsL TOL
1 3 Sun September 24, 1989 boxscore W New York Jets @ Miami Dolphins 40 33 411 2 524 2
2 3 Sun September 25, 2011 boxscore W New Orleans Saints Houston Texans 40 33 454 2 473 1
Provided by Pro-Football-Reference.com: View Original Table
Generated 9/28/2011.

So think of this feature the next time you see a score that just looks strange, and you too might uncover an historic final score first.

P-F-R News: Site up-to-date for 2011

Posted by Neil Paine on September 16, 2011

Just got a message from Mike that I thought I'd pass along... The site is now fully updated for 2011, including player & team stats, boxscores, the Play Index, etc. -- everything that was updating on a regular basis last season is now up to date. In future weeks, we'll be updating the site each morning with stats from the previous day's games.

And as always, we welcome emails about site issues we may have missed, possible new features, or just to shoot the breeze.

Added: 2011 Pages, Historical Coordinator Data

Posted by Neil Paine on August 12, 2011

As you may have noticed this week, we now have 2011 team pages on the site. Right now these have the team's 2011 schedule & draftees, but they will be populated with 2011 stats when the regular season begins.

Mike also added the 2011 Draft page, and has made it possible to sponsor drafted players right now -- so get your Cam Newton sponsorship while it's hot.

Last but not least, we now have complete team coordinator info going back to the early 1970s. In addition to being awesome in and of itself, this data also allows us to list a coach's "coaching tree" -- coaches that he worked under as an assistant a coordinator or were his subordinates as a head coach.  (Thanks to Scott Kacsmar, who helped us enter this data.)

2011 Free Agent Tracking

Posted by Mike Kania on July 27, 2011

Now that the NFL is back to business as usual, we've added a free agent tracker with a list of current free agents to be updated as signings happen. The chart lists each player's career AV plus his AV over the last three years & is sortable if you want a quick look at who's the best player available (as long as your definition of "available" includes the perpetually-rumored-to-be-going-somewhere Brett Favre).

PFR Improvements (July 22, 2011)

Posted by Neil Paine on July 22, 2011

The owners and players may still be struggling to agree on a CBA, but we're definitely ready for some football. Our new programmer Mike Kania has been hard at work for the past nine weeks, and here are some of the new site features he has implemented today:

  • A better, faster navigation system along the top of all pages (roll-over the "[+]" to expand the menu and get more choices).
  • Fixes to various bugs, especially with regard to Approximate Value.
  • Row summation for player gamelogs -- click the rows of any two games, and we'll display the total stats accumulated over that span.

There's a lot more to come, so stay tuned. And be sure to email us if you have any questions or comments about the site.

Stathead Blog

Posted by Sean on April 25, 2011

Sports Reference's New Blog: Stathead

I have to admit that I find it very hard to follow all of the great research that people are producing every day on the web. Just for football, culling through the good stuff on Football Outsiders, Cold Hard Football Facts and Advanced NFL Stats is hard enough, but when you add in team blogs, other stathead blogs and everything else, it becomes impossible. This doesn't even include trying to locate recent research in hockey, basketball, baseball and soccer.

So we've decided to do something about it. Every weekday, the Stathead blog will summarize the best research-related studies, news, conferences, and resources for baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer.

The blog will primarily be edited by Neil Paine and will typically feature 20-30 links to analytic content around the internet. We've been working out the format over the last two weeks, and we think you'll soon appreciate our concise summaries for all of the articles we write about.

Feedback as always is welcome.

Add Links to Your Site’s Blog Posts to PFR Player Pages

Posted by Neil Paine on February 15, 2011

PFR Player Name Linker / Add your Site to our Player Newsfeeds

As you may have seen, we have newsfeeds on the PFR player pages, showing the latest player news from KFFL, injury reports and links to relevant PFR blog posts. If you have a blog or website with an RSS feed you can add your site to relevant player pages as well. Our Player Linker Tool will take your blog posts as you've written them and run them through a program and add links to PFR player pages where appropriate. So while you don't have the resource to create your own player pages for your site, you can treat us as your site's statistics partner, linking LT's name to our stats or any player all the way back to Y.A. Tittle and Otto Graham.

If the links then appear in your rss feed and you let us know to look for them, we'll pull them out of your feed and then link back to you from LT's page, or Otto Graham's or whomever you link to.

If you help your users find our great content, we'll help our users find yours. And best of all it is all automated except for one click of an easy-to-install bookmarklet. Check the Player Newsfeeds page for details. This link share will also work for tables you share using the SHARE tooltip found above every stats table on the site.

PI Finds: Final 2010 Team Adjusted Rushing Yards per Attempt, SRS-Style

Posted by Neil Paine on January 6, 2011

As a follow-up to the 2010 team passing ratings I posted Tuesday, I ran the same process on team rushing performances. The formula for adjusted rushing yards per attempt was:

ARY/A = (Rush Yds + 18 * Rush TD) / Rush Att

(The 18 comes from Chase's post on the value of TDs.)

Using the PFR Team Game Finder, I plugged every team single-game rushing performance of the 2010 season into the formula above, then adjusted for strength of schedule and game location using an SRS-style recursive loop. The result was a set of ratings that best predicted every game according to these equations:

Home ARY/A = Lg Avg  ARY/A + .5*HFA + Home Rush Offense Rating + Away Rush Defense Rating

Away ARY/A = Lg Avg ARY/A - .5*HFA + Away Rush Offense Rating + Home Rush Defense Rating

Here were the ratings (again, negative is good for defenses):

PI Finds: Final 2010 Team Adjusted Net Passing Yards per Attempt, SRS-Style

Posted by Neil Paine on January 4, 2011

Taking into account opponent and game location, which 2010 teams had the best passing offenses and defenses according to Adjusted Net Yards per Attempt? Let's use the PFR team Game Finder and Doug's SRS methodology (or, if you prefer, Chase's Rearview Adjusted Yards Per Attempt methodology) to find out...

With the team game finder, I called up every team passing performance of the 2010 season. Using the CSV option, I dumped the results into Excel and was quickly able to create a table listing the home and road teams' passing stats for each game of the season:

2010 Game-by-Game Passing Stats

From there, I set up an SRS-style recursive loop where every game's home and road ANY/A are predicted by the following formulae:

Home ANY/A = Lg Avg  ANY/A + .5*HFA + Home Pass Offense Rating + Away Pass Defense Rating

Away ANY/A = Lg Avg ANY/A - .5*HFA + Away Pass Offense Rating + Home Pass Defense Rating

Here were the results (negative is good for defenses):
