P-F-R News: Site up-to-date for 2011

Posted by Neil Paine on September 16, 2011

Just got a message from Mike that I thought I'd pass along... The site is now fully updated for 2011, including player & team stats, boxscores, the Play Index, etc. -- everything that was updating on a regular basis last season is now up to date. In future weeks, we'll be updating the site each morning with stats from the previous day's games.

And as always, we welcome emails about site issues we may have missed, possible new features, or just to shoot the breeze.

Stathead Blog

Posted by Sean on April 25, 2011

Sports Reference's New Blog: Stathead

I have to admit that I find it very hard to follow all of the great research that people are producing every day on the web. Just for football, culling through the good stuff on Football Outsiders, Cold Hard Football Facts and Advanced NFL Stats is hard enough, but when you add in team blogs, other stathead blogs and everything else, it becomes impossible. This doesn't even include trying to locate recent research in hockey, basketball, baseball and soccer.

So we've decided to do something about it. Every weekday, the Stathead blog will summarize the best research-related studies, news, conferences, and resources for baseball, basketball, football, hockey and soccer.

The blog will primarily be edited by Neil Paine and will typically feature 20-30 links to analytic content around the internet. We've been working out the format over the last two weeks, and we think you'll soon appreciate our concise summaries for all of the articles we write about.

Feedback as always is welcome.

Site Features: Check Out the Play Index!

Posted by Neil Paine on March 30, 2011

Here's another reminder for everyone to check out the Pro-Football-Reference Play Index. In case you don't already know about the PI, it's a set of research tools that allow you to create customizable queries on our database, save the results, and share them with others. With the PI, you can:

  • Use the Player Season Finder to search through every player's stats (since 1920) for single or combined seasons that match your criteria.
  • Use the Player Game Finder to search through our game logs (since 1960) for individual games that match your criteria.
  • Use the Player Touchdown Finder to search through every TD since 1940 for plays that match your criteria.
  • Use the Team Game Finder to isolate specific games or seasons matching certain criteria.
  • Use the Super Bowl Play Finder to search through every play in Super Bowl History (we'll be adding 2009 soon as well -- our apologies for the delay!)
  • Use the PFR Draft Finder to search through every NFL and AFL draft pick.
  • Use our Boxscore Search Tools to find head-to-head results, or all-time games matching a particular score.

And best of all, these features are 100% free to use!

So go ahead, give them a try, and you'll wonder how you ever got along without them.

Site Features: Approximate Value Leaderboards!

Posted by Neil Paine on December 9, 2010

In a move that's admittedly long overdue, we've added Doug's Approximate Value metric to a variety of places throughout the site:

And as always, you can search for AV leaders using the PFR Play Index's Season Finder (example).

Also, we overhauled the main AV page to make it more user-friendly, added a sub-page for Doug's extended explanation of the method, and created a blog category for AV to make it easier to find past and future posts that feature the stat.

Pro-Football-Reference.com Reset

Posted by Sean on November 22, 2010

Those of you paying close attention to PFR noticed that an hour or so ago, the site's look and feel was tweaked ever so slightly. Baseball-Reference.com got a similar reset about a month ago and we will be moving onto our other sites at some point soon as well.

These are not huge changes, but there are some.

  • Column headers can still be sorted, but clicking three times returns you to the default table
  • The tooltips have been improved in their appearance.
  • There is a glossary link above the stats tables that will show you all of the stats in the table in one place
  • All of the tables on the site are now shareable. Clicking that SHARE link above the stats tables brings up a dialog that lets you create custom reports from the table. You can delete columns and rows and then get the output as html, a link, plain text, text for your favorite bulletin board and more
  • Player pages now have a newsfeed at the top of the page that shows latest injury reports, news from KFFL, and player mentions in various blogs. You can add your blog to our newsfeeds and get links from your player mentions to PFR all in one feel swoop.
  • Player navigation to things like gamelogs, comebacks, splits and the like have been modified to be more in line with what you might know from Baseball-Reference.com. They now appear just above the player stats on the player pages.
  • The site should be faster now as we've tweaked the way the css and js is downloaded.
  • Every player, team, and box score now has a Facebook "Like" button, so that you can let the world know your favorite players. Go crazy.
  • The blog template has been tweaked a bit as well and you can have an image appear by your comments setting up a universal avatar at Gravatar.com.
  • Box scores got an updated look.
  • The search engine got an updated look and now also appears in a larger block on the front page.
  • There are now more links to the College Football Site.
  • Feedback is always appreciated and you can directly file a bug via our Feedback Form.

Checkdowns: Congrats to Jason Lisk, The Big Lead’s New NFL Blogger

Posted by Neil Paine on September 10, 2010

Some terrific news from the blogosphere this week: PFR's very own Jason Lisk (JKL for longtime readers of the blog) is now The Big Lead's NFL blogger. Everyone here at Sports-Reference is very proud of Jason, and we're also excited because it means we get to read his stuff a lot more (he'll be producing around 20 posts a week for TBL). Congratulations, JKL, you earned this.

Also, no need to worry -- Jason's relationship with PFR isn't completely over because of his new job. He'll still be able to occasionally post things like the AFL series, HoF profiles, and other historical pieces here, as well as podcasts. Obviously the majority of his time and writing power will be devoted to TBL, as it should be, but it's reassuring to know that he'll be making cameo appearances at our humble blog from time to time.

Anyway, big props to Jason, and here's to great success in the future. We'll miss having you around here all the time, but we're also thrilled about your new opportunity. Go get 'em!

Stadium, Game Time and Weather Info now in Boxscores

Posted by Jason Lisk on July 20, 2010

The boxscores on pro-football-reference now have stadium name, game start time (local time for the home team), playing surface type, and temperature, humidity and wind information. For example, if you go to this game from October 19, 1980 between Kansas City and Denver, you will see that the game was played at Mile High Stadium on grass surface, and had a local start time of noon (2 pm eastern) with 49 degree temperature and winds of 9 mph. This game was not chosen randomly, as it happens to be the last regular season Sunday game with a start time in Denver before 2 p.m. Mountain Time.

The stadium info was put together by Chase (with Neil lending a hand), I worked on the game time project, while Doug put together the weather info. A couple of disclaimers on the game time and weather. The game times go back to the 1970 season, and were compiled from archived newspaper listings of game times. I tried to find papers as close as possible to the day of the game, but for some weeks I had to rely on papers further out. I suppose that there could have been some game time shifts at the last minute or misprints in the original source, but I'm sure that these are 99% accurate. The weather info right now is daily, and not specific to the hour. It is based on the weather data from the airport for the city in question, and not every stadium is right by the airport. The reported temperature is the daily high if it was an afternoon game, and adjusted for night games using the daily average and low temperatures. The wind conditions reported are based on daily averages and maximum sustained winds on the day in question. I would view it as very good approximate weather info for the game in question, and it goes back to every game (except for 3 random holdouts) since 1960.

To close for today, I'll give you some of the cool info I was able to find in the game time data. Before we officially had Sunday Night Football, there were 11 regular season games played in primetime on Sunday night between 1978 and 1985, and here are the boxscores for those games:

New England at Oakland on September 24, 1978
Pittsburgh at Los Angeles on November 12, 1978
Denver at Oakland on December 3, 1978
Los Angeles at Dallas on October 14, 1979
Los Angeles at Dallas on October 18, 1981
Atlanta at San Francisco on December 19, 1982
Los Angeles Raiders at Dallas on October 23, 1983
Denver at Cleveland on September 16, 1984
New Orleans at Dallas on October 21, 1984
Dallas at New York Giants on October 6, 1985
Pittsburgh at San Diego on December 8, 1985
