LT’s touchdown record

Posted by Doug on December 13, 2006

I suspect this won't ultimately happen, but right now LaDainian Tomlinson is in position to be only the second person in post-merger NFL history to lead the league in a major category and double the output of the second-place guy. Here are the guys who have led the league in rushing touchdowns by the greatest percentage margin over second place:

Year Leader Second place %DIFF %Diffvs#10
=============================================================================
2006 LaDainian Tomlinson (26) Larry Johnson (13) 100.0 271.4
2003 Priest Holmes (27) Ahman Green (15) 80.0 170.0
1994 Emmitt Smith (21) Natrone Means (12) 75.0 200.0
1985 Joe Morris (21) Eric Dickerson (12) 75.0 133.3
1995 Emmitt Smith (25) Chris Warren (15) 66.7 150.0

In the 2006 row, the 100.0 indicates that Tomlinson has 100% more rushing TDs than second-place performer Larry Johnson. He also has 271.4% more rushing scores than the 10th ranked player in that category.

I said Tomlinson would be the second to do this. The first, not surprisingly, was Jerry Rice, who doubled Mike Quick's 11 receiving TDs in 1987 and more than doubled Quick's second-place total of combined rushing and receiving touchdowns in the same year.
