Random trivia: T.J. Houshmandzadeh edition
A big game against the Chiefs last weekend pushed T.J. Houshmandzadeh's yards per reception average into double figures. But if he continues to catch so many passes for so few yards (relatively speaking), he will challenge the record for lowest yards per catch average for a receiver with 1000 or more yards.
Who currently holds the record for lowest yards-per-reception average for a single season among players with 1000 or more receiving yards?
[REMINDER: this one isn't too hard to look up if you have the right tools (and if you don't, what are you waiting for?), so don't forget the p-f-r trivia protocol. Technology-assisted answers can be posted, but only after the correct answer has been guessed the old fashioned way. You could, of course, use technology on the sly and then pretend to be guessing the old fashioned way, but that would be really sad.]

Is this meant to be in a season or career?
I meant single season, and have edited the original post to reflect that.
Shoot I didn't realize that we could download the database! That would have made my attempts at the last trivia question (total NFL QB yards by college) much easier!!
As for this one, I'm going to guess Brian Brennan
Thought process: Since TJH is in double figures and is challenging the record, it's probable that the record average is in the low double figures. Since the assumption is 1000 or more yards, the guy we're looking for must have had close to 100 receptions. Let's say at least 90(???, assuming he didn't blow 1000 yards out of the water). So what we're looking for is a guy who had a lot of receptions and a short average. Therefore, either they were screen passes or he had virtually no RAC yardage. Therefore, maybe either a running back or a possession type tight end. I'm going with one of the following:
Frank Wycheck
Bubba Franks
Ben Coates
Larry Centers
or any Dolphin RB
(btw, those were just the first 4 people I thought of off the top of my head that fit the criteria.... I'm probably way off)
I will guess Keyshaun Johnson
Having used the technology route, I now realize I'm way off. Ben Coates was #43 overall.... not too bad a guess, I suppose.
When Sterling Sharpe had the receptions record back in the early 90's I don't think he had a ton of yards, so maybe him. Others that come to mind are Marshall Faulk (lots of receptions for a RB, maybe enough for 1000 yds), Keyshawn Johnson also seems like a possibility.
I remember Troy Brown having a year with 100 receptions and barely 1000 yards. Also, Marty Booker in Chicago had a similar year.
Andre Johnson
Got to be Larry Centers.
Ouch, 962 yards.
Thurman Thomas?
I just noticed Thomas never came anywhere near 1000 receiving yards. New guess:
Roger Craig
Andre Johnson or Lofton .I can't remember his first name. Played for the Bill among others.
My off the cuff guess was #5 on the list.
Andre Johnson is very close. Marty Booker is even closer.
Won Lee, you're thinking of James Lofton. He has a career 18 yards per catch.
The lowest I've found is still a bit above 10 ypc.
Cris Carter. All he does is catch touchdowns, after all.
As a follow up question found while entertaining my friend with this trivia:
Name the only 2 players in NFL history to have at least 1000 receiving yards in a season but only 1 TD?
Darrel,
Argh. That fool had a 18 ypc avg? I just remember him catching 5 yard button hooks.
Maybe Derrick Mason? Why can't I remember stats?
Art Monk?
I'm going to say either Troy Brown the year he caught 101 passes, or Haywood Jeffries in the Oilers' run-and-shoot - I think he had a year where he averaged 10 point something.
Art Monk was my guess, to. No dice.
Troy Brown caught 101 passes for 1199 yards.
Haywood Jeffries's lowest average was 11.8 in 1991.
Cris Carter in 1994 has to be the winner. 10.3 ypc.
Damn, beat me to Carter. That's my guess.
I would say Troy Brown...
When I said Andre Johnson, I really meant Cris Carter. Therefore, I got the answer correct first.
GLS.
excuse me doug, but isn't Mike Furrey about 0.0542896770358645 yards per catch below Andre Johnson?
btw, i just eyeballed it. No calculator involved, I assure you.
Good point, monkeytime.
Round-first-sort-second doesn't give you the same answer as sort-first-round-second. I was doing the former, which is wrong.
The way the Bengals are playing, TJ's going to challenge Marvin Harrison's record for receptions (143).
Well, I'm satisfied with 5th
LaDainian Tomlinson? 100 receptions in 2003. Or Larry Centers? He had 100 receptions one year in Arizona. I'll take Centers on this
No, Centers had "101/962", LT had "100/725"
On a side note, re: Dan's question about guys with 1,000 yards and only 1 TD-
I know Keyshawn Johnson did it.
My other guess would be Frank Sanders, he never scored touchdowns.
Michael Irvin is the only other player with 1,000 receiving yards in a season and only one TD. Frank Sanders did have consecutive years with 1,000 yards and just seven total TDs.
A look at the stats showed he had a 900+ yard season with 1 TD after those two as well.
Housh is at 10.22 YPC through fifteen games.
