HOF Class of 2010: And then there were 131
The names of the 131 candidates on the preliminary list of modern-era nominees for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010 have been released. There are 103 players on the list, including punters and kickers. In its current form, Approximate Value does not assign points to kickers and punters, although PFR favorite Nick Lowery is on the preliminary list. Of the remaining 99 players, they are presented below, sorted by career AV:

After the two layups, who's third? Oh yeah, the guy that will never get in.
No Dick Lebeau? Travesty!
Lebeau is nominated, but as a senior nominee (along with RB Floyd Little), which means that he is not competing with these 131.
Why doesn't Randall Cunningham get more HOF consideration? He has 3 great seasons (3 unofficial MVP awards) with great running stats. His record was a solid 82-52-1. I think if you gave him Troy Aikman's supporting cast, he would put up better numbers.
Oh, ok. I thought Lebeau would still be listed here even though he's a senior nominee.
I know the formula for AV is listed, but is there an "AV" page yet?
Kickers are players too!
@ Knobbe:
There's a link (in name) on the top of the page to the far left called "Approximate value", there you'll get the full developmental story in the AV-series
I think he meant like AV leaders, etc?
Incidentally, is there any reason it's rounded to whole numbers? I don't suppose it makes a difference, just seems like a potential place for accumulation of errors
@ MattieShoes - exactly
Play Index is your Friend. non-peak adjusted AV.
So this doesn't use the 100%-95% falloff that Chase is showing.
Good point, Sean. Also, here's the top non-peak-adjusted AV for all non-active, non-HOFers:

I think Ed and/or Steve Sabol need to be in there. They probably have more to do with my current love of the NFL than any other people. I loved renting NFL Films videos when I was a kid. Watching those NFL Films shows on ESPN when I was a kid taught me a lot about the history of the NFL. And I still love watching the NFL Films shows on ESPN each week. Last week was a cool episode about 3 guys at the bottom of the 2008 Steelers roster.
I will second Richie's endorsement for the Sabols. I grew up watching actor Paul Burke hosting the "championship games of the NFL" with NFL Films footage, sound, and music and vividly remember the footage of Larry Brown trying run against the no-names during Washington's loss to Miami in SB 7.
Also, for me Dick Butkus became a household name not so much because of his name or seeing him play on TV, but mainly due to NFL Films capturing his hard-necked style of football.
I think if the vote was made by players only they would all have to agree they owe a lot to NFL Films for not only telling their stories, but educating fans.
If you add the chances of Jerry Rice & Ed DeBartolo, Jr, you get 100%.
I can't believe they didn't find a way to keep Ed off the list.
I'll also second Richie and Patrick, and I would love to see the Sabols enshrined, thanks to them (and also to the great narrator John Facenda and the also great music composer Sam Spence), many people love the NFL and his history (incluiding me). I prefer to see an NFL Films segment from 1969-1983 (the best produced, by far) that any other tv program or film.
It's a mistake that they left Richmond Webb out of the list, he went to 7 Pro Bowls, 2-times 1st team All-Pro and other 2-times 2nd team, and he has an AV of 100

If you add the chances of me and Jerry Rice, you also get 100%, so I'm not sure what your point is.
Looking at this list, I see 22 guys who belong in the Hall. Here's hoping they each get in eventually. I also agree that the Sabols belong, but since they have to go in one at a time, I'm betting they're stealing votes from eachother. Interesting that Jacoby's AV is so much higher than Grimm's. I wonder why Grimm keeps getting more push for the Hall? I don't want another Sabols situation, though.
Point? None.
Just an old Clevelander letting off steam at a local felon appearing on the wrong list.
