Tecmo Super Bowl Game of the Week: Vikings at Steelers

Posted by Neil Paine on October 23, 2009

Courtesy of Matt Knobbe and the Tecmo Super Bowl Repository, here's your Tecmo Super Bowl Game of the Week for Week 7, featuring the Minnesota Vikings and the Pittsburgh Steelers. The highlights:

(How did we do this? Matt and the other dedicated folks at the Knobbe.org message board have spent a lot of time over the years updating this classic Nintendo football game, including the introduction of a 32-team ROM a few seasons ago. Sounds complicated, but don't worry, it's easy for you to enjoy the fruits of their labor: just get yourself an NES emulator, download the 2009 version of Tecmo here, and play to your heart's content. And be sure to check back at Matt's site for roster updates and more Tecmo-related goodness all season long.)

I guess people must have complained about the videos being too long? Because this Game of the Week you interrupted a lot of the action - for example, the 7 consecutive runs, we never saw the runs finish, we only saw them start.

    A) I love that you do these things.
    B) I love that you experiment with how to present the videos.
    C) I think it would be best to let the plays develop and finish. I don't mind the narrative and I agree that you should not show all of the plays. But I think you're taking out the "feel" of the game by doing just the highlights.

In my opinion it's ok to leave it more than 5 minutes of video, 9 minute videos are good.

    Love the music.

    Thanks for doing this.

Yeah Right Peterson puts up 185 agianst a team that hasn't allowed a 100 yard rusher in what 23-24 games. The boys good but not that good

  3. Jason W Says:

Agreed with Wintermute. I much preferred the longer videos and actually seeing the plays rather than reading about them.

(And if the actual game goes like that tomorrow, complete with Antoine Winfield being on the field, I'll be happy.)

You need to find someone who can do a good Chris Berman impersonation and get them to do voice-over instead of the text.

  5. J Says:

Well except for the passes being forced when some of the receivers were open I think it's not bad

  6. Chris G Says:

thats neat but the outcome is wrong.

  7. Patrick W Says:

Wish this game would have held up as modeled. But the Vikes are proving to be the only team that can beat themselves.

  8. Knobbe Says:

That was me doing the video instead of Neil. Thought that I'd try out something different. Thanks for the feedback.

Many thought at the time this would maybe be a preview of the Super Bowl at the time. However, Steelers late season slide hurt, too bad because they may have been what the Jets did in the playoffs. After all, the Steelers were the defending Champs. I think the NFL in future should add 8 teams in each conference for playoffs. That way teams won't have byes in first round anymore, and will be more equal playing field, everyone has to win 3 games to get to Super Bowl, instead of only needing 2 if you have a bye.
