NCAA: SRS ratings through nine weeks

Posted by Chase Stuart on Sunday, November 1, 2009

First, a big thank you to Peter R. Wolfe for making all college game scores available and to Neil for handling these duties for me last weekend. Another week, and another Texas/Florida tie on top. Behind them, Cincinnati is right on Alabama's tails for #3, thanks to the Bearcats' SRS-leading margin of victory score (Texas and Boise State rank ahead of Cincinnati in raw margin of victory, but the Bearcats rank first here thanks to winning all but one game by double digits). Oregon jumps into the top five after dethroning the Trojans; no doubt the list below won't be the only set of rankings that has Oregon ahead of Boise State, despite the Broncos' lopsided victory over the Ducks in the season opener. As for Iowa, the Hawkeyes didn't earn any style points this weekend when they entered the fourth quarter trailing by ten, at home, to Indiana, the worst team in the Big 10. But in the end, they ran their record to a FBS-best 9-0.

Fact of the week: With Oregon's huge victory over USC last night, the Ducks now have the top two SRS performances against FBS teams this season. Oregon beat USC (SRS rating of 15.9) by 27 at home (+24), giving them an SRS score of 39.9 points above average for that game. But that's only the second best performance this year -- Oregon's earlier 39 point win at home (SRS-style margin of victory of 30) against Cal (+12.4) tops the list at +42.4.

Final note: Thanks to a rare Sunday night without the NFL (thanks to the World Series), college football's week nine hasn't ended yet. Marshall travels to Central Florida in what counts as a big game in Conference USA play.

Biggest upset of the year? Got to be Clemson losing to Maryland, the clear worst team in the ACC. That's an SRS difference of 26.3 points, yet the Terrapins won a 3-point game at home in early October.

Next up? The shocking loss by Houston to UTEP, which in addition to there being a 17.5 point gap in SRS, was also a 17 point loss for the Cougars.

K-State losing to LA-LA and tOSU losing to Purdue are not far behind.
