Best Single-Game, Super Bowl, & Single-Season Quarterback Performances – Adjusted for Opponent/Era
As a follow-up to last week's post about the 100 Greatest Single-Game Quarterback Performances since the merger, today I'm going to re-post the list after adjusting every QB game for the strength of the opposing defense (as you can imagine, this changes the rankings quite a bit). Commenter/PFR contributor Scott Kacsmar had a great idea about adjusting for era and opponent in one step, so instead of translating from the per-game rates of the season in question to the 1993-2009 period average, I simply translated from the regular-season per-game rates allowed by the defense faced. In other words, if a 1975 defense happened to allow numbers that would be average in 1993-2009, I wouldn't translate the raw stats of the QBs that faced them at all, even though the general offensive environment of 1975 was far different from that of 1993-2009.
Anyway, after that change here are the best QB games since 1970, adjusted for opponent:

Re: Patrick W. -
It's true that Bradshaw struggled to hang on to the starting qb job until the second half of the 1974 season, when he finally took full control of it.
He was kind of Trent Dilfer during the '74 playoffs, though he played his role well, made some nice plays and limited his mistakes.
However, during the '75 season he established himself as one of the better qbs in the league. That season was one of the best overall during his career and he was named to the Pro Bowl for the first time at season's end.
Check out the TD strike to Swann in Super Bowl X. He wasn't just along for the ride that season.
Yes, Bradshaw had a decent 1975. I was speaking more to his reputation than stats for those first two Super Bowls. I saw Super Bowl X so I remember what Terry did in that game as well as the playoff games leading up to it. His stats ascended that year, including the postseason. But it wasn't really until 1978 that Pittsburgh became such a dominating passing offense. And when Chuck Noll decided to pass more that is when Bradshaw really shined as a passer. Terry had the tools all along, but with Swann and Stallworth becoming more experienced in '78 and '79 the Steelers rolled through the competition using the passing game more than the run. It put Bradshaw on a higher pedestal. Yes, Terry's numbers as an aggregate are somewhat pedestrian, but because the Steelers won four Super Bowls in six years and Bradshaw looked good in three of them as a passer and one of them as a game manager he passes the muster as an elite QB, in my opinion. Of course, he had tremendous help along the way as the Steelers were one of the greatest teams of all time with their own wing in the Hall of Fame.
I agree that Marino was a better passer than Bradshaw, but he played on worse teams than Terry did and as a result had a much poorer playoff record. Marino did everything you'd want from a QB except run. But the Fish of that era were nowhere near the Steel Curtain of the 70s. So to say Marino didn't rise to the occasion as a QB I think is unfair. Like I said, did the QB add or subtract from his team's chances in the playoffs? Sometimes it's hard to tell because the QB is dependent on his O-line, WRs, RBs, TEs, defense, and the coaching schemes. So stats can be somewhat misleading and you use your best judgment and form an opinion.
What blows my mind about the whole "clutch" debate is that the Colts have won a Super Bowl with Manning. Shouldn't that have proved that he is clutch?
I think it is just a way for those who want to prop up others players to tear down Manning. They say he has "only" one Super Bowl. Because if they judged it any other way, Peyton would be on top.
By comparison, think of Babe Ruth. Played in his prime 80-plus years ago, still thought of as one of the best. Ruth has seven World Series rings. I have never heard seven rings as evidence that he is the greatest player ever. Why? You don't need to do that argument because everyone knows Ruth is the greatest anyway.
By comparison, people brought up rings regarding Brady vs. Manning (especially five years ago when NE was in its hey-day). Why? It was the only way anyone would see Brady as better.
Conclusion: I try to judge players as I would without rings. Example: If not for the rings, no one (not even his mother) would think Bradshaw was better than Marino. And considering how much credit for rings needs to go to coaching, defense, the running game, other 52 players, etc. I think that can be a fair (but not perfect) way to judge the situation.
Patrick W, exactly when was Marino a better passer than Bradshaw? In the reg. season-yes he was, and exactly what did that win for him and his team? It helped him get his team into the PO's, and then what happened? He was great in 1 Conf. Champ. game and that remains the biggest accomplishment on his Career Resume.
Dbm, until P. Manning led his team to that S.B. win, a majority of knowledgeable football fans were not giving him the credit he probably deserved. I'm sure you've heard this before, but that's how a QB "validates" his career-not my words, but the words of more than 1 ex-QB's . Plus, think about his team that year-his D was ranked 21st (yds. allowed), and 23rd (Points allowed). Only 1 S.B. winning team was worse-the '09 Saints (25th and 20th). The worst S.B. team ever was Jim Kelly's Bills team in '91 (27th and 19th). But, it is a team game, and all of these bad Defenses had Offenses to help it. But to ignore these games and pretend they never happened is simply ignoring the reality of a QB's main goal for playing the game.
A friend of mine just reminded me that I didn't specify that the above post was about the worst Defenses to play in the S.B. game. But he is saying that the absolute worst team ever was the "01 Patriots-they were ranked 19th on Offense and 24th on Defense. I guess they were the worst-statistically speaking.
Just because someone's an ex-QB (or ex-player period) doesn't mean they're smart. As long as guys like Trent Dilfer and Doug Williams have their SB rings, that "rings validate" argument simply does not work. Dan Marino is still better than the vast majority of SB winning QBs.
Scott, you're missing the point. Dilfer and Williams don't have a Career Resume to even worry about validating. When do they ever come up in discussions about the Best of All Time? It was coming up for P. Manning because he was putting up big numbers in the reg. season and not playing like a great QB or having much success in the PO's-until '06. What is wrong with expecting a QB in the NFL to be able to play good enough to reach the pinnacle of his profession, if he wants to be considered one of the best ever?
"What is wrong with expecting a QB in the NFL to be able to play good enough to reach the pinnacle of his profession, if he wants to be considered one of the best ever?"
It's using LOGIC to know that he's not even accountable for the majority of his team's success, as Neil stated several posts back.
Bob, we get it. You want to put the win-loss record of a 52-man roster on a QB and rank players at the position that way, and also summarize their entire careers in a couple playoff games instead of years and years of an entire NFL career. It's your choice and you're entitled to it. But it's also naive and irrational, and especially on a site that seeks to use objective and empirical analysis such as this one, it's out of place. Some common sense would be appreciated instead of spouting the same b.s. that you would hear more from the casual fan and media hype machine about using win-loss records to judge athletes in team sports.
I disagree with that Anon. Go back and read the 2nd half of my post #42 and you will see that I want to know how did a QB play in any game, but in PO games in particular. Did he play like a great QB and get the job done, or did he let his team down and play mediocre to bad. I want to know how he played more or at least as much as did he lead his team to the win. The great ones played very good in a majority of their PO games and that is why they were more successful than others.
It's not hard to figure out that a sample of 10 playoff games isn't more of a "true" indicator of a player's performance level than an entire NFL career.
And if you didn't know that, there's a subject that you can study called statistics.
That's an interesting post. Now if you will, please post your current Top 10 QB's of All-Time. Including any current or retired QB's.
RE: post 54, yes, Bob, I was referring to regular season stats. Marino was more prolific a passer than Terry Bradshaw and I doubt anyone would argue that. Both are in the Hall of Fame too. The question I would have for you is how much better would Pittsburgh have been if Dan Marino played for the Steelers during Bradshaw's years. Or how much worse would the Dolphins have been if Terry had played for them during Marino's seasons. Silly Q since we can't go back in time and simulate such. But when judging a QB I go by ability, how much of that ability was demonstrated on the field and how consistent was that QB over a suitable period of time. I throw out years in which the QB learned the ropes of the league or when on a serious decline due to age or the team faltering during early or late seasons of his career. In every measure Marino was better than Bradshaw as a passer.
As far as the playoffs are concerned nobody can argue Bradshaw's W-L record or his leadership in the postseason. But does that make him better than Marino, who had worse teams than Terry did? If you say yes, then why do we have a regular season at all? Why not just start a quadruple elimination 32-team tournament at the beginning of the season and watch it all unfold and the best teams at the end also have the best QBs, de facto.
Also, to those who think Bradshaw's numbers are not HoF worthy I ask you to look at not quantity but quality because there is a balance to be struck. He was an elite QB during those SB years (and a bit beyond) who was difficult to prepare for and difficult to contend with (superior running ability, quick release, strong arm, and as accurate as any elite QB of his time). He struggled in 1970-1974 but took wing soon after and did all that Chuck Noll could ask him to do. I belive he's in the Hall for quality of regular season play and quantity of playoff and Super Bowl wins.
OK, since you asked (how much better off would the Steelers have been with Marino). Let's see how each guy played when they had similar teams. They each had 2 teams that led the NFL in Least Points Allowed. Bradshaw in '76 and '78 and Marino in '83 and '98. How did each guy play with an advantage like that in the PO's: Bradshaw's stats: 11 TD's/5 INT's, an avg. Passer Rating of 101.5, he led his O to an avg. of 29 p.p.g., and all of that helped his team to 4 wins and 1 loss. Marino's stats: 3 TD's/5 INT's, an avg. Passer Rating of 75.9, he led his O to an avg. of 16 p.p.g., and all of that helped his team to 1 win and 2 losses. Ironically enough, Marino's '83 was exactly comparable to Brady's '01 (1st year to start games in the NFL). And Marino's '98 was exactly comparable to Elway's '98 (both were 16 year starters in the NFL). On top of that, Marino's Fins crushed Elway's Broncos in their reg. season game-31 to 21.
Just thought of something even more ironic-one of Bradshaw's years from above was '78. That year his Defense gave up the most points ever by a S.B. winning team, and yet they led the NFL in Least Points Allowed in the reg. season. Go figure.
Pretty much impossible for two teams to truly be similar.
Bob, you need to come to realize there's no point in looking at regular season numbers when talking about the playoffs. It doesn't matter where your defense and running game ranked in the reg. season. All that matters is how they played in that playoff game. Marino did have the #1 reg. season defense in 1998. When they went to play Denver in the AFC-D, the Broncos dropped 31 points on them and ran for 250 yards. They ripped that defense apart. The Dolphins ran 13 times for 14 yards. Marino threw 2 INTs, but I think at least one of them came in the 4th quarter when they were already down a ton of points.
As for the 83 Dolphins, they gave up 27 points to the Seahawks (the 01 Patriots never gave up more than 17 in the playoffs and they scored 3 return TDs on DEF/ST). Marino gave them a 20-17 lead in the 4th QT of that game. Seattle scored the go ahead TD, Miami's return man Fulton Walker fumbled the kickoff. Seattle added a FG to go up 27-20, and Walker fumbled again. Marino never got the ball back.
Or take a season like 1994. Marino was having a heck of a playoffs with a win over Montana's Chiefs, and they had a 21-6 lead in San Diego. They couldn't run the ball all day, and only ran 16 plays in the 2nd half, and San Diego took a 22-21 lead. Marino drove them in position for a winning 48 yard FG and they missed. Playoff run over.
Re: Super Bowl 13
Bradshaw fumbled and it was returned for a TD, so 7 of those points by Dallas were his fault. The Steelers built a 35-17 lead with under 7:00 left in the game. Staubach threw 2 TDs to make the score 35-31, but Dallas couldn't recover the second onside kick.
You can give Bradshaw a lot of credit for leading his offense to 35 points against a great Cowboy defense, but it's not like he was overcoming a poor defensive effort when the game was close. The defense gave up 10 points in the first 53 minutes.
Fun to listen to this debate...BOB sure has his convictions though from an impartial judge, he is woefully mistaken on so many levels.
Bob, the best pt to your argument was made by Neil, who illustrated the folly of judging a qb by playoff wins using Tom Brady. Does anyone in their right mind believe brady was better back in the superbowl years than he is now? For god sakes, the man won a sb mvp award when his offense scored a MEASLEY 13pts. What would have happened if ty law doesn't return that int for a td and the pats lose? i know you will counter with "o thats just a what if" but its a fair pt.
One thing I will add to it is this. In a regular season, a team is expected to play a certain number of good, decent, and bad teams. I would argue that given this, a qb has much more influence over a team's win loss record in the regular season because stellar qb play can usually makeup for core deficiencies against inferior opponents. When playoffs come, the talent disparity is almost non existent and basically, the margin for error becomes razor thin. Thus, playoff wins are much more a matter of better quality overall teams and LUCK than anything. case in pt.-last years jets chargers with nearly all the bad luck going the way of the chargers. If I were to go by your philosophy, rivers just can't get it done somehow BECAUSE NATE KAEDING screws up 3 field goals(2 of which are under 43 yards AT HOME?).
I also want to address another issue. If you want to look beyond stats, you need to look at team philosophy's and judge overall talent levels. I urge you to check out profootballfocus.com that attempts to quantify the play of every position in the nfl. Granted the site uses inheritantly subjective measures no matter how much they try to remain uniform, but still, it does give a reasonably good idea of who plays well on each team. Getting back to the colts-the colts philosophy has really centered around relying on the talents of a few extraordinarily elite players and filling in the rest with marginal quality. The last 2 games illustrate this best. The colts win by having their offense sustain long drives and score points and having their defense play with the lead. they do this because A) the defense will get worn out if the colts aren't methodical with the ball, and B) the lead places less of a burden on their bad run defense and suspect secondary, allowing their pass rushers to just Tee-off. In essence, their style hinges on manning playing well...if he doesn't...they lose more often than not, why? they don't really have that much talent to begin with, certainly not as much as Pittsburgh, Baltimore, or the patriots in their heyday.
I think I have that SD-Mia game on video tape in my garage. I've never felt like re-watching it - but I should.
How are these adjusted for Defense? I see Manning vs. the '04 and '05 Broncos who were notorious for having 2 of the worst pass defenses and yet those 2 performances are top 5? LMFAO.
Actually, the 2003 Broncos had the 9th-best passing defense in the NFL by yards/attempt allowed and the 12th-best by passer rating. In 2004, they allowed the league's 8th-lowest yards per attempt and the 12th-lowest passer rating. Doesn't sound like two of the worst pass defenses to me.
8th and 9th ranked is not at all impressive. Those performances belong WAY further down the list.
I don't want to join the side debate so I'll focus on the actual article.
I have a minor complaint. I notice 104 QB super bowl performances listed. This obviously includes QBs who didn't start as there has yet to be 52 super bowls. I would argue against their inclusion. Do any of the other lists in the article include non-starting QBs? I suspect not, but if so Id be interested in knowing which ones.
