History Was Made in Last Sunday’s 49ers-Bengals Game
On Monday, John Adair tweeted this about Sunday's San Francisco-Cincinnati game:
The 13-8 final score of the 49ers-Bengals game, according to Pro-Football-Reference, has never happened before in NFL history #49ers
How did he find that? Using the Game Scores PI tool, he was able to look for all games that ever had a 13-8 score:
| Rk | Week | Day | Date | Winner/tie | Loser/tie | PtsW | PtsL | YdsW | TOW | YdsL | TOL | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | Sun | September 25, 2011 | boxscore | W | San Francisco 49ers | @ | Cincinnati Bengals | 13 | 8 | 226 | 1 | 228 | 3 |
Pretty neat, right?
Here's another one for you -- last week's Saints-Texans game was only the 2nd in NFL history with a 40-33 score:
| Rk | Week | Day | Date | Winner/tie | Loser/tie | PtsW | PtsL | YdsW | TOW | YdsL | TOL | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | Sun | September 24, 1989 | boxscore | W | New York Jets | @ | Miami Dolphins | 40 | 33 | 411 | 2 | 524 | 2 |
| 2 | 3 | Sun | September 25, 2011 | boxscore | W | New Orleans Saints | Houston Texans | 40 | 33 | 454 | 2 | 473 | 1 |
So think of this feature the next time you see a score that just looks strange, and you too might uncover an historic final score first.

But there have been about 5 games that ended 18-16.
Gah! Was just going to post this as a comment on the last thread
We also have a list of all game scores which have yet to happen which is kind of interesting to look through. Lots of 2s, 4s, 5s, and 8s in there. Strange that 13-8 happened before 14-8 did, though.
If you look at the missing game scores page 13-8 is not there but if you look at the game score summary pages for scores that have happened, 13-8 isn't there either!
Apparently it's in transition.
Good catch, those are up-to-date now.
I do tend to think about this, though, in games with early safeties. I was intently watching that Carolina/Jacksonville game, hoping for some crazy final score.
I believe it is just a matter of time before we see a 35-29 game.
Great tool. Oddly enough there are only 2 x games that ended 18-3. Woulda thought 6 field goals vs 1 might occur more often.
But there are 4 x games of 2-0, all before 1940 (pre forward pass?). However, couldn't use wildcards to find all losing scores=2. The search routine would abend.
Wasn't there a game a few years back involving the Steelers (and I forget whom else) that ended with a very strange score (11-9, maybe?) which was uncertain because of a final-desperation-play turnover that may or may not have been returned for a TD by a Steeler defender (Polamalu, I believe?). I don't have a PI subscription (unless my Baseball Reference one works here).
Also, I like parentheses (a lot).
Maybe you're referring to Steelers v. Browns in 2008, which ended 11-10?
Um. Make that Steelers v. Chargers.
Another new one, Packers beat the Broncos 49-23!
Packers won Sunday 49-23. It appears that's the only game ever with that final score.
