Basketball Reference Adds Pages For All Draftees in NBA History

9th November 2021

While Basketball Reference has been creating unique player pages for everyone selected in the NBA draft for the past couple of years, many people who never played in the NBA but were selected in the draft could only find their names in our draft tables. We have decided to rectify this by creating player pages for every draftee in NBA history, dating back to the inaugural 1947 BAA Draft. Due to historical drafts being much longer than the current two-round format, this has led to almost 4000 new player pages. These player pages include biographical information, links to relevant college/international pages and family connections where available.

Some notable people that are getting pages as a result of this addition:

- Len Bias, 2nd overall pick in the 1986 draft who tragically passed away days later
- Lusia Harris, 137th overall pick in the 1977 draft and the first woman ever selected
- Terry Stotts, 38th overall pick in the 1980 draft who went on to coach the Portland Trail Blazers
- Carl Lewis, 208th overall pick in the 1984 draft who had set Olympic track and field records
- Phil Elderkin, 205th overall pick in the 1973 draft who was a reporter selected as a joke by the Cavaliers' Bill Fitch
- Dave Winfield, 79th overall pick in the 1973 draft who went on to have a Hall of Fame career in Major League Baseball.
- Jay Bilas, 108th overall pick in the 1986 draft who went on to be a successful college basketball broadcaster

We give big thanks to data developer Charlotte Eisenberg for her time organizing and collecting data for this project.

WNBA Transactions Added to Basketball Reference

8th June 2021

At the beginning of the WNBA's 25th season, we announced a huge expansion of the advanced stats and features available in our WNBA coverage on Basketball Reference. We are still working on more features, and today we're happy to announce the addition of transaction history to WNBA players and teams.

For example, you can now take a look at the 2021 league transactions page and catch up on big moves like all the trades that happened on February 10, including Natasha Howard to the New York Liberty and Kia Nurse plus Megan Walker to the Phoenix Mercury. One player with a lot of transactions added to her page is Shey Peddy. The draft pick she was selected with was traded twice, including a 5-team trade in 2011. Then, in 2019 and 2020 she made it through many 7-day contracts before finally signing a rest-of-season contract with the Mercury. Peddy went on to even hit the game-winner in a playoff game against her former team that season.

This transactions addition includes a couple of transaction types unique to the WNBA, such as 7-day contracts and contract suspensions. The latter is used in the WNBA to give teams flexibility and allow players to pursue international tournaments; Katie Lou Samuelson is a recent example of this transaction type.

We want to give special thanks to our data developer Charlotte Eisenberg and intern Christina Wiech for collecting and formatting this data, thus making this addition possible. We're constantly working to improve our coverage of the WNBA and the other leagues we track on Basketball-Reference, so if you have any suggestions or feedback, send us your thoughts via our feedback form.

17th April 2020

The 2020 WNBA Draft will take place tonight, with the New York Liberty owning the first overall pick. Basketball Reference continues to gradually expand its WNBA coverage, and in honor of the occasion we've added the league's draft history. In addition to the rookie draft held yearly, we also have the various dispersal, allocation and expansion drafts performed over the league's history, as well as the Elite draft of 1997. As you can see in the 2019 rookie draft table, we also include college or former international team, as well as their career WNBA stats.

2019 NBA Draft Preview at Basketball-Reference

15th May 2019

Now that the lottery balls have been sorted out, the 2019 NBA Draft order is set. With that, Basketball-Reference has activated a 2019 NBA Draft Preview page to give you a quick lay of the land as we approach the draft date, June 20.

Of course, we've got the draft order there, from the New Orleans Pelicans holding the 1st overall pick down to the 60th pick held by the Sacramento Kings. We also have the calculated expected value in Win Shares for each draft pick, as well as the percentage of players selected with a pick that go on to play at least 1 NBA game. The table shows the top players selected at each pick to give you a quick look at best-case scenarios. For example, having the final pick of the 1st round may not seem that exciting but when you see David Lee and Jimmy Butler were 30th overall picks, that could help your mindset a little.

Our 2019 NBA Draft Preview also includes a list of the top 50 prospects as ranked by CBSSports.com, along with a statistical overview of their 2018-19 college season where applicable. For prospects who played in Europe, such as Sekou Doumbouya, clicking on their name will take you to available European statistics.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact us through our feedback form.

Seven Questions for the NFL Draft

26th April 2017

While the NBA Playoffs, MLB season, and Stanley Cup Playoffs may be in full swing, football never sleeps. This weekend, the country's most popular sport will take center stage as the NFL Draft descends on Philadelphia.

Last year's draft showed how a smart team can use the draft to turn their fortunes around at warp speed, as the Dallas Cowboys, who went 4-12 in 2015, took Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott with two of their first five picks and then watched as that duo led the team to a 13-3 record and the #1 seed in the NFC. While it may be too much to ask for a team to replicate the feat of finding two franchise-changing, All-Pro skill players in the same draft, Dallas' experience shows that it's not impossible.

Are any teams out there poised to pull off the same feat as Dallas and go from their division's cellar to its throne by shrewd drafting? Is there another Dak Prescott out there, waiting for the right team? Let's dig into those questions and more, with our preview of the 2017 NFL Draft. Read the rest of this entry
