Donovan Wilson of the Dallas Cowboys<\/a> had a special assignment in which he led the league: hitting the quarterback. This unique pressure from the blitzing defensive back in \u201cBig D\u201d had Wilson credited with nine hits on the opposing signal-callers, including five sacks and seven tackles for loss! Timing is everything in this skill set; those are some unbelievably productive numbers for Donovan to help his team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fumbles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Safeties often need to be \u201cJohnny-on-the-spot\u201d by creating opportunities for their defenses to take the ball away from runners. A look at two productivity stats in this area includes forced fumbles and fumble recoveries. Here are the leaders that either created a loose ball or gained possession of it more than any of their peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rayshawn Jenkins and Justin Simmons topped the league lead for safeties that caused their opponents to put the ball on the ground with three each, but we will save them for another stat category. Right behind them were several strong and free safeties that forced two fumbles in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many Safeties recovered two fumbles in 2022, but none did it better than the Minnesota Vikings<\/a> alert DB Camryn Bynum. Bynum recovered the loose balls twice and added 55 yards of return to help his team. Being alert enough to dive into the pile after a loose ball is one thing, but having the hands to scoop and run with it is special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defending the Pass<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As stated earlier, a safety has to wear many hats. They not only have to stop the advancing ball carriers by bringing them to the ground, but they are also required to disrupt pass catchers. Here are some men in the position that led the NFL in 2022 in pass defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
