The 1976 Steelers team did not win the Super Bowl and is best remembered for its staunch defense, passing game, and outstanding pass catchers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. The Ravens’ offense in 2020 picked right up where it left off the season before and made its hay by punishing opposing defenses with a solid running game behind a powerful offensive line. Lamar<\/a>, Gus<\/a>, Ingram<\/a>, and J.K. Dobbins<\/a> produced 3,071 yards of ground and pound, but the real heroes were the big guys who opened the holes. The Patriots were not among the upper echelon of NFL teams in the 1970s, but they had a very effective running game. The 1978 edition of the New England Offense churned out 3,165 yards in a 14-game regular season. Amazingly, they did it by committee, too, as not one runner on the roster sniffed the 1,000-yard mark on the season, but four men surpassed 500 yards on the well-balanced attack. Sam Cunningham<\/a> led all Patriots with 768 yards on the year. Stud linemen like John Hannah<\/a> had much to do to help the team reach this lofty ground number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many need to remember or realize the accomplishments of the AAFC’s San Francisco 49ers. Technically, they were not an NFL franchise yet, but they could tote leather. In just 14 games, 3,663 yards brought the fans at old Kezar Stadium to their feet plenty of times. The main point of the attack was halfback Johnny Strzykalski<\/a>, who chipped in 915 of these yards running. Walter Payton<\/a> spearheaded the Chicago rushing attack (1,684 yards for #34) in 1984, the same season he eclipsed Jim Brown’s all-time rushing record<\/a>. The team produced 2,974 rushing yards of offense overall. Of course, Sweetness couldn’t have accomplished this on his own.
