The strong stable of backs on the roster, which included Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill, was complemented by fleet of foot quarterback and NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. Jackson and Ingram each eclipsed 1,000 yards in the 16 regular-season games, and Edwards put another 700 yards to the cause to create the bulk of these hard-fought distances of turf.

The 1976 Steelers team did not win the Super Bowl and is best remembered for its staunch defense, passing game, and outstanding pass catchers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. However, many must remember that the rushing game was very effective in setting up the pass and keeping the defense well-rested. When you have a team in Buffalo, New York in the mid-1970s, a region hit with heavy snow, you better know how to run the rock. The Bills 1975 did just that by producing 2,974 yards of offense from their running game. O.J. Simpson made the lion’s share of these rushing stats with over 1,800 in the 14-game season.

The Ravens’ offense in 2020 picked right up where it left off the season before and made its hay by punishing opposing defenses with a solid running game behind a powerful offensive line. Lamar, Gus, Ingram, and J.K. Dobbins produced 3,071 yards of ground and pound, but the real heroes were the big guys who opened the holes. Orlando Brown Jr., Nick Boyle, Bradley Bozeman, Matt Skura, Ben Powers, and D.J. Fluker are the main blockers who deserve credit for the rushing success of the Ravens in 2020.
1978 New England Patriots Rosters, Stats, Schedule, Team Draftees

The Patriots were not among the upper echelon of NFL teams in the 1970s, but they had a very effective running game. The 1978 edition of the New England Offense churned out 3,165 yards in a 14-game regular season. Amazingly, they did it by committee, too, as not one runner on the roster sniffed the 1,000-yard mark on the season, but four men surpassed 500 yards on the well-balanced attack. Sam Cunningham led all Patriots with 768 yards on the year. Stud linemen like John Hannah had much to do to help the team reach this lofty ground number.

Many need to remember or realize the accomplishments of the AAFC’s San Francisco 49ers. Technically, they were not an NFL franchise yet, but they could tote leather. In just 14 games, 3,663 yards brought the fans at old Kezar Stadium to their feet plenty of times. The main point of the attack was halfback Johnny Strzykalski, who chipped in 915 of these yards running. This is a major pro football record for rushing yards in a season for a team.

Coach: Marv Levy (4-12-0)

The 1978 Kansas City Chiefs made our list of the most team rushing yards in a season. KC’s 2,986 yards of hard-fought grass are mainly attributed to the excellent running of Tony Reed’s 1,053 yards.

Defensive Coordinator: Buddy Ryan
Other Notable Asst.: Jim Dooley (Offensive Consultant), Ted Plumb (Receivers) and Dick Stanfel (Offensive Line)
Stadium: Soldier Field
Secretary of the Board of Directors: Virginia Halas McCaskey
General Manager: Jerry Vainisi
Offensive Scheme: Smashmouth
Defensive Alignment: 4-3
Preseason Odds: Super Bowl +2500
Training Camp: UW Platteville (Platteville, Wisconsin)
Could this list be complete without talking about Sweetness? Walter Payton spearheaded the Chicago rushing attack (1,684 yards for #34) in 1984, the same season he eclipsed Jim Brown’s all-time rushing record. The team produced 2,974 rushing yards of offense overall. Of course, Sweetness couldn’t have accomplished this on his own. Studs in the trenches like Jimbo Colvert, Jay Hilgenberg, Mark Bortz, Kurt Becker, and Keith Van Horne pummeled defensive fronts to spring the shifty back to daylight.

This recent addition to the list is the champion of Super Bowl LIX. In 2024, the Birds rushed for a team record 3,048 yards. Led by Saquon Barkley’s 2,000-yard season and an indomitable offense line, these Eagles preferred the ground over flying.

The 2024 Baltimore Ravens nearly broke the 2019 team’s NFL record of 3,296 rushing yards with 3,189. Free-agent signing and professional battering ram Derrick Henry trudged for 1,921 yards to pair with Lamar’s 915 on the ground.
Conclusion
While the 2019 Baltimore Ravens hold the official NFL record for the most rushing yards in a single season, the NFL landscape constantly evolves. Let’s remember the All-America Conference’s ’48 Niners that eclipsed any NFL mark (3,663). With a renewed emphasis on the running game in recent years, teams strategically incorporate dual-threat quarterbacks and powerful running back committees. It’ll be intriguing to see if the Ravens’ record remains untouchable or if a future team, fueled by a potent rushing attack, can rewrite the history books and claim the rushing crown. One thing’s certain: the battle for rushing supremacy promises to be an exciting aspect of the NFL for years to come.
