Join us to examine the best running backs’ accomplishments, impact, and legacy in Raiders franchise history. This journey will remind us of their significant contributions in shaping the franchise’s identity and solidifying their place among the greatest running backs in team history.
The following regular-season criteria will be examined to select the quintet of the franchise’s greatest running backs: rushing yards, overall touchdowns, receptions, and awards while with the team. Secondly, if applicable, we will look at playoff numbers with the club, what stats they may have had in the league while not a member of the subject franchise, and any other circumstances or events that merit consideration.

Mark van Eeghen was a pivotal player for the Oakland Raiders during his NFL career, serving as their reliable and rugged running back from 1974 to 1981. Selected in the third round of the 1974 NFL Draft out of Colgate University, van Eeghen quickly established himself as a dependable force in the Raiders’ backfield. Known for his power running and toughness, he became the team’s leading rusher for five consecutive seasons from 1976 to 1980.
Van Eeghen played a key role in the Raiders’ success during the late 1970s, contributing significantly to their Super Bowl victories in the 1976 and 1980 seasons. In Super Bowl XV, he rushed for 75 yards, helping the team secure a 27-10 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. By the time he left the Raiders, van Eeghen had amassed 5,907 rushing yards, making him the franchise’s all-time leading rusher at the time.

Marcus Allen’s tenure with the Los Angeles Raiders was pretty special. Drafted 10th overall in 1982, Allen quickly established himself as a dynamic playmaker. His speed, power, and versatility made him a nightmare for defenses. With 8,545 rushing yards, this Heisman winner is the all-time leader in rushing for the Raiders.
A highlight of his career was his dominant performance in Super Bowl XVIII, where he rushed for a record 191 yards and was named MVP. Allen’s ability to break tackles, elude defenders, and score touchdowns from anywhere on the field made him one of the most exciting players in the 1980s. Banaszak did not make this list because he is among the top five yardage gainers of Raiders running backs. He is currently at number eight on that list. We chose Pete in the top five for what he did with the ball, and that was to hammer out the short-yardage plays needed and score touchdowns. Banaszak sits second in Raiders history with 47 rushing TDs.

The modern fan may ask, “Who was Clem Daniels?” He was a standout running back for the Oakland Raiders during the early American Football League (AFL) years. Playing for the team from 1961 to 1967, Daniels was known for his speed, versatility, and ability to dominate both as a rusher and receiver. He led the AFL in rushing yards in 1963 with 1,099 and was named the league’s Most Outstanding Player that season.
Daniels was a four-time AFL All-Star and was crucial in establishing the Raiders as a competitive franchise in the 1960s. When he retired, he was the AFL’s all-time leader in rushing yards with 5,101. His ability to catch passes out of the backfield also set him apart, making him a dual-threat weapon. Clem Daniels remains one of the most respected figures in Raiders history and was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.
