It has been quite a while, but the Minnesota Vikings have been to a Super Bowl. Actually, they went to and lost four Super Bowls between 1969 and 1976. Bud Grant and the Purple People Eaters had a heck of a run in Minnesota. This franchise is sixth all time in playoff appearances (32). When you go to the postseason frequently, you need a steady quarterback to help lead you there. This team from the North has had some formidable signal-callers since its inception in 1961. Now it’s time to answer the Skol chant and head to the Land of 10,000 Lakes where we will discover the top quarterbacks of all time for the Minnesota Vikings.

You are never going to confuse Wade Wilson’s career stats with Drew Brees, but his stint in purple was good enough to get him a spot with the top quarterbacks in Minnesota Vikings history. Wilson was the backup QB for several years behind Tommy Kramer. In 1987, Wilson got an opportunity to start and had a 5-2 record in those games. He threw for 2,106 yards, 14 TDs, and had a league-leading 8.0 Y/A in limited time. That postseason is where Wade made his mark. First, he entered a Wild Card game at New Orleans with the Vikings down and surged them to a 44-10 victory with two touchdown strikes and a 120.6 passer rating. The following week he led the Vikings to one of the biggest playoff upsets ever over the 13-2 49ers in San Francisco when he hit for almost 300 yards and 2 TDs. Wilson came into the 1988 season as the Minnesota starter and had a Pro Bowl performance. He led the league with a 61.4 completion % and threw for 2,746 yards. Once again, this native Texan got the Vikings a win in the Wild Card round over the Rams before losing the revenge game at San Fran. In the Vikings all-time rankings, Wilson is fifth in both passing yards (12,135) and touchdowns (66). Winning three playoff games for a franchise is no small feat, and that is a major reason why Wade Wilson should be remembered as one of the top quarterbacks of all time for the Minnesota Vikings.

The 1999 NFL Draft is infamous because five quarterbacks were taken in the first 12 picks. Besides Donovan McNabb, all of them had forgettable careers, except one guy: Daunte Culpepper. This 6 ‘4, 260-pound specimen didn’t play as a rookie, but when he became the Vikings starter in 2000, he validated his draft status. That season he led Minnesota to an 11-5 record and a spot in the NFC Championship Game; he threw for 3,937 yards, 33 touchdowns, had a 62.7 completion %, and accrued a 98 passer rating. In six seasons as the main man in purple (two were injury shortened), Culpepper passed for 3,400+ yards in the air four times and three times hit for at least 25 TD passes. Statistically, 2004 was this Central Florida product’s best season: a franchise-record 39 touchdowns to only 11 INTs, a league-leading 4,717 passing yards, a 69.2 completion %, and a 110.9 passer rating. Another important element to Daunte’s game was his running ability. Taking down this truck-sized human was not easy as he rushed for at least 400 yards per year from 2000 to 2004. In 2002 he rumbled for 609 yards and 10 TDs. Culpepper’s combined stats in his two playoff victories for the Vikings are pretty stellar (a 2000 NFC Divisional Round win over the Saints and a 2004 Wild Card round win at the Packers): 7 TD passes with 0 picks, 586 yards passing, and a 128.85 passer rating. Daunte Culpepper may not have had the longest career in the league, but he had a splendid stretch that earned him a place with the best quarterbacks ever for the Minnesota Vikings.

It might sound a little crazy, but Kirk Cousins is already a top-five quarterback of all time for two different franchises. After a solid six-year stint in the Twin Cities, Cousins is one of the best quarterbacks in Minnesota Vikings history. Cousins is the Vikings all-time leader in passer rating (101.2), second in passing touchdowns (171), and third in passing yards (23,265). In Minnesota, Kirk topped 4,200+ yards passing four times and 30+ TDs three times. That goes along with a sterling completion % (67.9) and an incredibly low INT % (1.8). In 2019, this former Spartan led the Vikes to a dramatic playoff win at New Orleans with 242 yards and a TD pass. Captain Kirk led the team to a 13-4 record in 2022 with 4,547 aerial yards and 29 TDs, but they fell in the playoffs to the Giants. Although Cousins had many spectacular games in purple, a spotless performance in 2019 against the Lions was arguably his best. In a 42-30 win at Detroit, he went for four touchdowns with no picks, 338 yards, a 70.59 completion percentage, and a 141.5 passer rating. A lot of NFL enthusiasts may not be enamored with Kirk Cousins, but his stats are undeniable, and fans in the Gopher State know Kirk Cousins is one of the top Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks of all time.

Tommy Kramer had a lot of pressure because he succeeded the most popular QB Minnesota fans ever knew, but he did so admirably and deserves a spot with the top quarterbacks ever for the Vikings. Kramer backed up franchise icon Fran Tarkenton his first two seasons and then became the starter in 1979. He started his career with three straight 3,000+ yard campaigns and a combined 68 touchdown passes. In 1981 #9 put up his best numbers: 3,912 passing yards and 26 TDs. Then in 1986 he actually led the NFL with a 92.6 passer rating and posted 24 TDs to only 10 INTs; that got him his only Pro Bowl invitation. In that ‘86 season, Kramer had a six-touchdown game in a win over the Packers. Unfortunately, great team success eluded Tommy and the Vikings as he only had a 54-56 record as the starting quarterback. However, he did get the Vikes a win in the 1982 Wild Card round over the Atlanta Falcons when he tossed for 253 yards and 2 TDs. If you analyze the all-time team rankings, you’ll find this slinger is tied for first in game-winning drives (19), second in yards passing (24,775), and third in touchdown passes (159). Tommy Kramer isn’t a Hall of Famer, but he did steady work in the North for over a decade to get recognized as one of the top Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks of all time.

Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton had a unique career arc that saw him start his career in Minnesota and then return to finish his career there, and he is very likely the top quarterback in Minnesota Vikings history. Drafted in 1961, this rookie came off the bench in his very first game to lead the Vikings to a big 37-13 win over the Bears; he threw four TD passes that day and ran for another score. The Scrambler’s first tour of duty in Minnesota didn’t see much winning, but he did drop 116 TD strikes and at least 1,997 passing yards each of those six seasons. Known for his entertaining scrambling and ability to extend plays, Tarkenton rushed for 2,548 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns as a Viking. After a five-year stint with the Giants, Fran returned to Minnesota in 1972, and this time he got the Vikings to the playoffs five times with three Super Bowl appearances in a four-year span. In 1975, Tarkenton was the NFL MVP with 25 TDs and almost 3,000 yards in the air. From 1973 to 1976, the Vikings had a 45-10 regular-season record but were never able to capture the Lombardi Trophy. Ironically, in his final season of 1978, this scrambler produced career highs of 3,468 passing yards and 345 completions (both led the league). Not only is this man the leader in virtually every major passing category in Minnesota history, when Tarkenton retired he was the all-time NFL leader in passing TDs (342), passing yards (47,003), and completions (3,686). It’s plain to see that Fran Tarkenton’s illustrious stats make him an NFL legend and very possibly the top quarterback of all time for the Minnesota Vikings.
