Green Bay Packers Top 5 Quarterbacks of All Time

There is a reason they call Green Bay Titletown … 13 NFL championships (including four Super Bowl wins) … that is four more than any other franchise. The Super Bowl trophy is even named after iconic Packers head coach Vince Lombardi. Prior to him there was another legendary coach Curly Lambeau … as in Lambeau Field. Mike Holmgren wasn’t a bad coach either. Their long-time GM Ron Wolf even has a bust in Canton. In addition to these coaching and front office immortals, the Green Bay Packers have been blessed with some special quarterbacks. Three of them would rank high on the all-time list of best QBs in NFL history. And their current young gunslinger is pretty special as well. How about you grab a beer and a brat as we recount the top quarterbacks of all time for the Green Bay Packers.

Don Majkowski might not compare to the top guys on this list, but for a few years he was a decent quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. Majkowski got to Green Bay in 1987 when the once-proud franchise had fallen on hard times. By 1989, he fueled the Pack to a 10-6 record as he led the NFL in passing yards (4,318) and completions (353); he also tossed 27 TD strikes. That earned him a Pro Bowl selection and a second-place finish in the MVP race. In that signature season, the Magic Man had five games with at least 330 yards passing and captured the hearts of football fans nationwide. His most memorable moment was a late touchdown pass in a thrilling 35-34 win over the Saints; that day he threw for 354 yards, 3 TDs, and had a passer rating of 131. Unfortunately, injuries severely hampered Don’s career, and he was never able to repeat the “Majik” of 1989. In only 68 games as the Green Bay signal-caller, he did throw for 10,870 yards and 56 touchdowns. It may have been brief, but Don Majkowski’s stint in Green Bay was good enough to call him one of the best quarterbacks in Packers history.

Lynn Dickey joined the Packers not too long after the glorious Lombardi era; that’s a tough act to follow. He didn’t achieve much team success in Green Bay, but he still gets a place with the top Packers quarterbacks of all time. From 1976 to 1985, Dickey threw for 21,369 yards and 133 touchdowns (both fourth in franchise history). 1982 was the only year Green Bay reached the playoffs with Dickey under center. In fact, they won a Wild Card game 41-15 over the St. Louis Cardinals where this QB had perhaps his best game ever: a 73.9 completion %, 260 yards passing, 4 TDs, and a 150.4 passer rating. The following year, although the team was just 8-8, Lynn had his best statistical season and led the league in some important categories: 4,458 passing yards, 32 touchdown strikes, 9.2 Y/A, and 15.4 Y/C. That performance got him a fifth-place finish in the NFL MVP race. In ‘84, this QB out of Kansas State added another 3,000-yard season and 25 TD passes. Green Bay fans may not associate Lynn Dickey with the promised land, but he does deserve a mention with the best quarterbacks ever for the Packers.

Now we have reached the holy triumvirate of Green Bay Packers quarterbacks. After Vince Lombardi, Bart Starr may be the most revered man in Packers history and is certainly one of their top quarterbacks ever. Starr quarterbacked the Pack to five NFL titles (‘61, ‘62, ‘65, ‘66, & ‘67). Of course, he was the MVP of Super Bowls I and II. In five playoff games during those Super Bowl runs, this Hall of Famer had 10 TDs with only 2 INTs, 1,169 yards passing, and a 114 passer rating. He even added in that unforgettable QB sneak to win the infamous Ice Bowl over Dallas in 1967. Because the Lombardi teams leaned so much on a power ground attack, Bart’s passing numbers don’t jump off the page, but he did lead the NFL in both completion % and passer rating four times. He was the 1966 league MVP as the Packers went 11-2 and won it all. If winning is the ultimate stat, #15 covered it: a 94-57-6 regular-season record and an almost unblemished 9-1 playoff record. This legend returned to coach Green Bay from 1975 to 1983 but couldn’t reclaim the glory of the 1960s. With 24,718 passing yards and 152 TD passes, Starr still sits third in Green Bay history. The Packers have had some legendary QBs, and Bart Starr definitely qualifies as one of the top Packers quarterbacks of all time.
Aaron Rodgers
Aaron Charles Rodgers (A-Rod)

The last two studs on the Green Bay Packers all-time quarterbacks list probably would both qualify as top 10 quarterbacks in NFL history if you’re looking purely at the data … the Lambeau faithful went from one franchise icon to another. First, we will go with Aaron Rodgers, who ranks second in team history with a 147-75-1 record and 59,055 passing yards. However, he is the Packers all-time leader in TD passes (475), completion % (65.3), and passer rating (103.6). Like the two other big names on this list, #12 won a Lombardi Trophy for Titletown at Super Bowl XLV. He was the game’s MVP with 304 yards, 3 TDs, and a 111.5 passer rating in a 31-25 victory over Pittsburgh. Don’t forget … Rodgers led the Packers to three straight road playoff wins just to reach that Super Bowl. Besides that, his list of accomplishments reads like a Harvard honors student: 13 seasons of 25+ touchdowns, 12 playoff appearances, 10 Pro Bowl nods, 10 seasons of 4,000+ yards passing, 10 seasons with a 100 passer rating or higher (four times the league leader), and 4 MVP awards. Remember, he sat behind another Green Bay headliner his first three seasons. If you had to pick only one Aaron year to highlight, you might focus on his 2020 MVP campaign: a 70.7 completion %, 48 TDs to only 5 INTs, 4,299 passing yards, a 9.1 TD %, and a 121.5 passer rating. Some Green Bay fans are disappointed that #12 only won one Super Bowl title, but he gave them a chance every year he was healthy. Aaron Rodgers left Green Bay after the 2022 season, and he is a no-doubt-about-it Hall of Famer in the near future, but for now he will have to settle for being one of the top quarterbacks in Packers history.

There is only one Packers legend left to add to this list: Brett Favre. This Hall of Famer from Mississippi is maybe the greatest Green Bay quarterback of all time. He is the franchise’s all time leader in passing yards (61,655) and wins (160-93). Starting in 1992, #4 pulled this historic franchise out of a 20-year slump, and they remained solid contenders for the next 15 years. The height of Favre’s power was 1995 to 1997 … three consecutive MVPs, three times the leader in TD passes, two Super Bowl appearances, and a Super Bowl title. This cameo performer in There’s Something About Mary had 3,000+ yards all 16 seasons he was a Packer which spotlights maybe Favre’s best attribute: his toughness. If you exclude one punter, this true gunslinger has the NFL record for consecutive games played: 299 (323 if you factor in the postseason). At a position that takes a pounding, that might be his most impressive stat. Any great player has their signature moments and so does Brett: the late TD bomb to Sterling Sharpe to win a ‘93 Wild Card game at Detroit, his two TD strikes in Super Bowl XXXI, or his brave four-touchdown, 399-yard game in 2003 shortly after his father passed. In a weird twist of fate, this legend’s last pass as a Packer was an overtime interception at Lambeau Field in the 2007 NFC Championship Game. You remember … the game where Tom Coughlin’s cheeks were painfully red and chapped. In terms of all-time NFL rankings, this Packer is third in completions (6,300), fourth in passing yards (71,838), and fifth in passing touchdowns (508). The Green Bay Packers were very fortunate to have two of the greatest quarterbacks of all time back to back, Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, and those men might be the best players in Packers history.
