Many knew Joe Perry as the “Jet” for a good reason: the guy could run like the wind. His speed was complimented by superior athleticism and a knack for finding daylight in opposing defenses. Perry was in the Niner’s arsenal from 1948 to 1960, where he established the early model for future San Francisco runners to follow. During his career with SF, the Jet produced 8,689 rushing yards and 68 TDs on the ground, averaging 5.2 yards per clip.

The Oxford Dictionary defines “garrison” as a body of military troops provided to an area. Appropriately named, 49ers running back Garrison Hearst was like facing a one-person army to the opposition when he had the ball in his hands. Hearst was a unanimous All-American in college, playing for the Georgia Bulldogs, and he took that talent to the Bay Area after NFL stops with the Cardinals and Bengals.
Hearst played for the 49ers from 1997 through the 2003 season and made quite a splash, gaining over 5,530 rushing yards for the team and scoring 26 TDs.

Roger Craig’s talent expresses his athleticism and timely arrival into Coach Bill Walsh’s West Coast offense with the 49ers. Number 33’s exceptional pass-catching skills and great running proved to be just the asset Walsh and the Niners needed in the 1980s. Roger came to the Niners as the franchise’s second-round selection in the 1983 NFL Draft.
Craig ran for 7,064 yards with San Francisco and registered another 4,442 career yards as a receiver. This balanced attack of utilizing Roger’s talents was on full display in 1985 when the back became the first man in NFL history to hit the milestones of 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in a single season.

Frank Gore seemed to play at a high level forever! This ironman of football impacted the NFL from 2005 through the 2020 season. His best seasons were with the Niners, during which he ran for 11,073 yards and scored 64 rushing touchdowns.
One of Gore’s trademarks was his consistent play. He averaged over 4 yards per carry throughout his NFL career, even in later years when he was considered “long in the tooth” by League standards. Gore’s biggest ability may have been his enduring availability, as he dipped below 14 games played only once during his impressive 16 NFL seasons.
