Let’s clarify that our mission is to judge these men as NFL players, not humans. With that said, the Juice was as dynamic of a running back as the Bills and the NFL, for that matter, have ever seen. The former USC Trojan and Heisman winner had it all: speed, decisiveness, and power. His runs were often poetically graceful while at the same time savage upon opposing defenses. O.J. was the first rusher to collect 2,000 yards in a season, and mind you … he did it in a 14-game season in 1973. Simpson produced 10,183 yards for Buffalo on the ground, which resulted in 57 TD scampers.

Shady was anything but that; this guy was front and center in the spotlight! Spending the first six seasons of his career in Philly, McCoy was also a REAL McCoy in Buffalo … a threetime Pro Bowl selection. His 25 rushing touchdowns as a Bill and over 3,800 ground yards in the Buffalo winter made the team an offensive threat to the opposition.

When coach Marv Levy and the Bills drafted Thurman Thomas in the second round of the 1988 NFL Draft, it was a match made in heaven! Thomas would reward his employer by being a key cog in one of the most prolific offenses in NFL history: the 1990s Bills. Thurman was a dual threat, rushing for almost 12,000 yards and scoring 65 TDs, but Thurman was equally effective in catching passes, as his 22 touchdowns and 4,341 air yards attest.

Five Pro Bowls, four Super Bowl appearances, two First-Team All-Pro selections, an MVP, and a Gold Jacket prove that Thurman Thomas has solidified a spot on this list.

With only a little time with the Bills so far to make his mark, James Cook is still writing his Buffalo history. He eclipsed 1,000 rushing yards in 2023, 2024, and 2025. In fact, he was the NFL’s leading rusher in 2025 with 1,621 yards, earning a Second-Team All-Pro nod. James is quick to the hole and as fast as Mercury once he springs free. He is also a great pass catcher who complements Bill’s potent offense (130 career receptions). One should not be surprised if, one day, James Cook makes his way to the top five of this list.

Conclusion

The Buffalo Bills have a rich history of exceptional running backs defining eras and electrifying fans. Each left a lasting legacy on the franchise, from power runners to versatile playmakers. These players carried the team on the field and cemented their place in Buffalo’s history.
