Complete List of Super Bowl Winning Quarterbacks

Introduction

It is no secret that being the ultimate team game or not, the quarterback will generally unduly endure the brunt of the blame for a Super Bowl loss but oftentimes bask in the glory of winning the Super Bowl ring. Here is a complete list of the starting QBs that took center stage after their team won in the first Fifty-Seven editions of the Super Bowl.

One and Dones:

A group of starting signal callers have been lucky enough to kiss the Lombardi at least once in their careers as the victors of the big game. Here is a complete list of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks who started the game and finished with one victory in the Big Game.

The former New York Jets signal caller may be one of the most famous victors of the Super Bowl when he promised and delivered the win in Super Bowl III over the highly favored Baltimore Colts. Even though he only made it once to the big dance and won as a starter, his name has been immortalized as synonymous with Lombardi Trophy victory.

Dawson had won AFL championships before the merger with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1962, 1966, and 1969. He started for his team in Super Bowls I and IV but was only on the winning side of the NFL title game once in SB IV as the Chiefs defeated the Minnesota Vikings.

Johnny U found victory in his second Super Bowl playing for the Colts in the fifth edition as Baltimore defeated the Cowboys 16-13. He would not be denied of being a winning QB in a Super Bowl.

The Snake took the Oakland Raiders into the Rose Bowl to crush the Minnesota Vikings  32-14 in Super Bowl XI.

As the Washington Redskins QB in Super Bowl XVII, Theismann and company enjoyed a 27-17 victory over Miami.

The 1985 Chicago Bears were known for their awesome defense, but the offense with Walter Payton and former BYU man McMahon was always must-see TV.

Simms was always steady and took the New York Giants on a great playoff run in 1986, capped off by a resounding win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXI, 39-20. Phill was the MVP of the game!

Elway and the Broncos were beaten up again in Super Bowl XII by another NFC East team; this time, it was MVP Doug Williams and his Washington teammates smashing Denver 42-10 to get on the list of Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks.

Hostetler started Super Bowl XXV as the Giants defeated the heavily favored Bills 20–19 on the famous wide-right kick.

From Washington State to starting for Washington D.C., Rypien played at a high level and took home the Super Bowl XXVI MVP honors.

Young took full advantage of his only start in the Big Game, earning the MVP Award of Super Bowl XXIX as the 49ers took care of business against the upstart Chargers.

Favre had the Packers contending every season he played, but he only took Green Bay to two Super Bowls and won the NFL title only once in SB XXXI over New England.

Warner started under center in three Super Bowls with two teams (Rams and Cardinals) but won it just once as the game’s MVP, and his St. Louis Rams upended the Titans in SB XXXIV.

The journeyman QB Dilfer caught on with the Baltimore Ravens as their defense was flying high, and the QB and his teammates knocked off the Giants in Super Bowl XXXV.

Johnson was another game manager who played well enough and let his defense of the Tampa Bay Bucs do the rest in SB XXXVII in a victory over the Raiders.

This Purdue product was called undersized for the NFL, but his big heart and strong arm led the Saints to go “Marchin’ In” to Miami and dominate the Colts 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV. Brees took home the MVP Award for his fine play in the game.

Rodgers faced a strong Steelers defense as he led the Packers in an MVP performance to a 31-25 victory in Super Bowl XLV. At the time of this writing he still has a chance to win one more.

In SB XLVII, even the lights going out couldn’t stop MVP Flacco from stealing a win from the 49ers 34-31.

Wilson was one yard away from having the Seattle Seahawks as a repeat Champion. Russell and the Legion of Boom did take care of business against the Broncos in XLVIII. Does Russ have enough gas in the tank to get one more before he hangs up the helmet?

Who doesn’t think of Foles catching a TD pass and not throwing it in the “Philly Special” as the Eagles won Super Bowl LII? Nick wasn’t the starter at the beginning of the season, but he won the MVP Award in the biggest game of his life.

The trade that took Stafford to the Rams paid dividends when the veteran QB was hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after Super Bowl LVI. His throws to game MVP Cooper  Kupp were instrumental in the win. He and the Rams would love for him to win another one too.

Two Timers

This next group enjoyed it so much the first time, they went on and won a second championship for good measure and move up the list of the Super Bowl winning QBs.

This Champion QB took winning the League to new levels by not only leading the Packers to victory in the first two Super Bowls but claiming Most Valuable Player honors in each, too. Remember, this was after he and Green Bay had already won many Titles before the big game existed!

In Super Bowls VI and XII, Roger the Dodger took the Dallas Cowboys to victory lane twice. Staubach won MVP honors in SB VI and played in two games against the Steelers, where the Cowboys suffered heartbreaking losses.

Griese helped the Miami Dolphins to victory in Super Bowls VII and VIII, including helping with that perfect season.

---

This former Heisman winner didn’t have the greatest start to an NFL career but he hung in there and found magic with the Raiders, helping the franchise capture victory in Super Bowl XV (Game MVP) and XVIII.

If anyone has had perseverance as a starting Super Bowl QB, it was John Elway. The Denver QB lost three SBs in the 1980s before winning it all in 1997 and 1998, his last two seasons in the NFL as a player.

Big Ben piloted the Steelers to the Big Game thrice and was the winning QB in two of Pittsburgh’s six titles.

Eli Manning won two titles for the New York Giants, defeating Tom Brady and the favored Patriots each time.

Not to be outdone by little brother Eli, Peyton won a title with two franchises: Super Bowl XLI with the Indianapolis Colts and Super Bowl 50 as a member of the Denver Broncos.

Entering the 2023 season, Mahomes has played in three Super Bowls in his six years in the League, winning two for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise. Number 15 might still not be done adding to this Lombardi Trophy total, as he is just now entering his prime.

Not Enough Hands for the Trophies!

There are the elite QBs in NFL history of the Super Bowl era that have won more championship hardware than they can comfortably carry. Here are the Championship signal-callers with three or more Super Bowl wins as a starter.

The Pittsburgh Steelers franchise was placed in the realm of the winning teams when the original TB 12 led the Steel City Squad to four Super Bowl victories in six years during the 1970s, winning the MVP honor in two of the four.

Montana was the perfect fit in the Bill Walsh offense system. Just how many Super Bowls did Joe Montana win? He rewarded the San Francisco 49ers with four Super Bowl wins as a starter. The legend was also a significant factor in the contests, as Joe was the game MVP in three of the four.

Aikman manned the helm of the Dallas Cowboys Dynasty during the 1990s, producing three Lombardi Trophies for the “Boys.” Aikman captured the MVP award for Super Bowl XXVII with a star-studded roster for Dallas.

The most Super Bowl wins as a starting quarterback belongs to Tom Terrific and his seven victories in the NFL title game.
